Is it Illegal to use Speed Radars?

Speed radars are nothing new. They’ve been around since 1968. However, their legislation has always been changing with time. We will look into its legalization from significant countries.

USA

If we talk about its legislation in America, it varies from state to state. Almost all states allow speed radar in passenger vehicles. However, all the states don't let it in commercial vehicles due to US laws of transportation. If you get caught using it commercially, you can face a fine of up to $50,000 or five years in prison.

These laws vary from country to country. Now, we look into other countries and their legislation regarding speed radars.

UK

All kinds of speed radars, including mobile, fixed, or laser, are legal. You can easily have them in your vehicles. However, there's a hot debate ongoing in parliament on the matter that whether these speed radars should be allowed or not.

All the European countries allow GPS-only devices because that information is publicly available. On the other side, there's a massive conflict if we talk about speed radar with multiple features. Most of the countries put an enormous penalty on the usage of speed radars.

FRANCE

If you are in France and want to speed up your vehicle than the given limit, then hold on because all kinds of speed radars are illegal to use anywhere in France. The rules are quite strict, as if you even get caught with an off device in your car, you can get a massive penalty for that. These laws even apply to GPS and sat-nav systems, which you can have outside speed radar. If you enter France with speed radar or other related equipment, you can face a fine of €1500. Apart from that, if you break French driving laws, you can also have your UK driving license confiscated by French Police. A new network of speed cameras have recently been installed across France, and many of them are not signposted, so be cautious at all times before breaking the limit.

SPAIN

Speed radar detection technology was legal when driving in Spain. However, as of May this year, the usage of speed radars became illegal. Though, GPS only technology is still legal, and you can use it without any issue. The transportation department of Spain has created an application that locates all speed detection cameras. This feature can help you if you have speed radar inside your car. Before using it in Spain, it is essential to know that you can face a penalty of up to a substantial €6000.

ITALY

The use of speed radars in a commercial or private vehicle is illegal in Italy as well, and you can face a fine of up to €2800 in case you get caught while using. However, just like many other countries, only GPS technology is legal. You can have this facility in your vehicle without any hassle.

GERMANY

The laws related to speed radars are pretty different from all the other countries in Europe. You are entitled to have speed radars. However, you can't use them in moving vehicles. You will eventually face a penalty if you get caught with a speed radar in your car while driving.
